A wonderful group of MediaCommers took some time out of the office to volunteer at Acton Homeless Concern. Read on to find out more about what they got up to.
Acton Homeless Concern is a charity that opens its doors to the homeless and less fortunate for food, advice and shelter. They provide lunch and other services such as a barber, and giving out essential supplies such as toiletries and under garments. Our morning consisted of assisting them in preparing the food and then serving it to around 120 people who came in for lunch over the span of 2 hours. We simultaneously washed and rewashed dishes as people came in to speed up the process. After lunch time was over, we deep cleaned the entire kitchen, eating area, as well as outside the building itself where a lot of people were hanging around.
The food served was of top quality, fresh and prepared with the utmost care and love of the people running the charity. They also offered dessert, a variety of hot and cold beverages and the option to takeaway food for those who didn’t wish to dine in. The cleanliness of the place was also extremely pleasant to see. Our kind host also offered us food and was happy to answer our questions about what they do.
The people working there are extremely hard working and rely heavily on volunteers to assist them every day. It is non-stop physical labour after which we were all so tired, but we left with gratitude and heavy respect for the people who have devoted their lives to this cause. It was an extremely eye-opening and rewarding experience and I would encourage anyone to take some time to help these angels.
