For International Women’s Day 2022, several MediaCommers gave their time to volunteer with the Media Trust.
Media Trust is a charity which works with the media and creative industry to give marginalised groups and young people a stronger voice, whilst facilitating those within the industry to use their expertise to help charities and communities.
The opportunity to work with the trust was a popular one, and from the stories of those who attended, we can see why! Here is what a few of them told us about the day.
Amy Lawrence, Director – Digital.
“I spent the day working with the Tanzania Development Trust, a charity run entirely by volunteers, helping them build their social content strategy. It was a fantastic experience finding more about the charity’s work and working with those from other areas of the industry to offer our expertise and deliver a concrete plan for them to move forward.”
Jo Saunders, Media Engineer.
“I was assigned the role of team leader, working with four other volunteers from across the industry. Our charity was 'South West Surrey Domestic Abuse (SWSDA)' which provides free, independent and confidential advice to anyone affected by domestic abuse living in southwest Surrey. Their main objective of the day was to better target people who identity as LGBTQ+. Women in same sex relationships are just as likely to be affected by domestic abuse but have few specialist support options available. The charity needed help letting them know their service exists.
We provided a digital marketing plan for the charity. Including ways to enhance their website, from user experience to SEO keyword optimisation, improving social media channels, building volunteer resources without funding, and approaches to advertising.
My experience volunteering with Women’s Voices event was incredibly rewarding. Although it was held virtually, the quality and engagement between us all was brilliant. It’s a timely reminder of the amazing power we have as a group and what we can be doing to lift each other up. I left feeling impassioned to help the cause further. I’m so thankful for Media Trust for providing us with the opportunity to dedicate a full day to helping a charity in need.”
Kerry Tinker, Account Director – Planning.
“As part of International Women’s Day, I was lucky to get a spot on Media Trust’s Women Voices. This was a fantastic opportunity for 200 women within the advertising space to work with various charities, giving them advice and expertise on how to run their marketing strategy. I worked with Womens Health in South Tyneside (WHiST) who are an incredible charity giving invaluable help to those who need it – the whole day was completely empowering, and it was a great opportunity to step outside of the normal day to day to make a real tangible impact in someone’s life. An absolute must do for anyone interested!”
