MediaCom’s Karen Blackett has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to the media communications industry. The award – Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – is part of the British honours system designed to recognise both civilian and military achievements.
The award recognizes Karen’s work in continuing to lead MediaCom’s success in the UK market as well as her wider role in promoting access to the industry through MediaCom’s unique apprentice scheme, which allows talented youngsters without a degree the opportunity to enter the media business.
Karen said that she was “thrilled, buzzing, and ecstatic. Truly humbled. I really hope that this honour encourages more young people from all walks of life and backgrounds to believe they have a voice and to use it.”
The award is the latest recognition for Karen, this year she has also been shortlisted for the Veuve Cliquot Business Woman of the Year Award and was named as the fifth most influential black person in the UK in the PowerList 2014.
